Yesterday my brother turned 28! Damn near 30! (lol) I took the old man to a vegan dinner (because he’s a vegetarian and I don’t eat diary or gluten) at Candle 79. The atmosphere, service and food were so good! After that we went to the Cort Theatre to see Stick Fly, produced by Alicia Keys and written by Lydia Diamond. It was sooo entertaining and, according to the New York Times, a “juicy family drama”. If you are interested in classism, racism, and familial issues as it relates to identity, this is a play for you. I’m focusing my career on work with families and social injustice, so this play was right up my ally. The actors included Mekhi Phifer, Dule Hill (from Psych), Condola Rashad, and Tracie Thoms. This was Mekhi Phifer’s Broadway debut. I was impressed with his acting. Acting in a play is totally different than movies and TV; he really held his own. I’m so interested in Lydia Diamond’s other work now. She also wrote Voyeurs de Venus, where she analyzes the life of Saartjie Baartman, aka the Hottentot Venus. So want to see that, or read it or something. Ok, so curious; off to Google it!
'Twas a good night! Happy birthday, Brother!
